The Japanese government has appointed Tetsushi Sakamoto (Economic Revitalization Minister , Japan) as the Minister of Loneliness to handle the increase in suicide rate in Japan. Due to novel corona virus pandemic, Japan was also under lock-down for a long period like other countries. The isolation has hit the Japanese so hard that suicide rates in the country has increased for the first time in 11 years.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said: “Women are suffering from isolation more (than men are), and the number of suicides is on a rising trend. I hope you (Tetsushi Sakamoto) will identify problems and promote policy measures comprehensively. I hope to carry out activities to prevent social loneliness and isolation and to protect ties between people”.
